The November CrossFit Bothell Member of the month has been with us for six months and perfectly demonstrates how hard word, consistency, good training and good diet can give results. She also has proven to herself and the world that CrossFit extends to other areas of our lives. She gets out there and uses her fitness to dominate Spartan races and keep up with energetic kids. Q1: What is CrossFit to you?

A1:  CrossFit has transformed my life, not only physically, but mentally as well.  I have always been a fit person, but struggled to stay motivated.  I would start a program, workout hard for a few months, and then get bored and quit.  I can’t count how many times that had happened, so my “success” was very sporadic.  I see CrossFit as a lifestyle.  My day doesn’t seem complete without hitting the gym on the way home.  When I first started, I had to be convinced to rest.  Now I am finding the balance with challenging classes and active recovery days – yes Alec I am listening :).  I see CrossFit as a life long commitment and find my self wanting to improve to continue to see measurable gains.  I never quite “got” the allure…. but now I find myself watching the Games, YouTube videos, and documentaries.  Completely obsessed!

On another note, I have always struggled with anxiety and have noticed that CrossFit helps me cope better by giving  me a constructive outlet.  I am very thankful for that.

Q2: What do you love about CrossFit?

A2: .It is constantly challenging me.  My mantra is that if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.  Crossfit does that for me.  I am so much stronger than believed I could be and CrossFit has taught me that.  I started seeing measurable results very quickly.  In fact, much faster than any other program I have tried.  It used to be about being skinny, now it is about getting stronger, leaner, and healthier.  Plus I find that throwing around some heavy barbells is very therapeutic!  Oh and burpees… I love burpees!

Q3: What do you love about CrossFit Bothell?

A3:  One word.  Community!  I find that this is the single most motivating factor.  If you love working with folks you enjoy and connect with, it doesn’t seem like work.  Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.  Even though the spirit of CrossFit is competing for time or reps, everyone genuinely wants to see everyone else succeed.  I have visited other boxes and I find that the community is the biggest differentiator for this gym.

Q4: What’s your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit thus far?

A4: .Finally getting my kipping pull-ups.  When I first came to Crossfit at the end of May, I wasn’t able to do a single pull-up. Murph was my first workout and completing a single pull-up let alone 100 in a single workout seemed like an insurmountable task.  After 6 months of work and some great coaching, I can now string together 5-7 unbroken in the workouts and completed a couple of WODs with an accumulated 80-90 pull-ups.  Bring it on Murph!

Q5: What is the goal you are working on at CrossFit?

A5:  I have terrible shoulder mobility, so I am currently working to perfect my overhead squat and snatches.  I really want to

start improving my form in some of the more challenging olympic barbell moves.  I want to learn better form to achieve better PRs!

Q6: What’s your favorite thing to do at CrossFit?

A6:  Long WODs!  If I could do an endurance class everyday, I would!  

Q7: What’s your favorite thing to do outside the gym?

A7:  If I am not at work, I am with my kids.  We love being outside, but on these rainy fall/winter days cuddling and watching movies or playing games is our thing.  I also have a guilty obsession with the Real Housewives, but only after the kids go to bed.

Q8: If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?

A8:  I would totally be my pug, Kona.  She is SO spoiled!!!

Q9: What’s the greatest band ever? (Editor Note: the only right answer to this question is METALLICA)

A9:  Well, I do have to say I do love Metallica, but Def Leppard is my favorite band of all time.  Any 80’s hair band music is my jam.  Alice Cooper is on my Pandora playlist for my home workouts.

A10:  Funny, after I started doing CrossFit, I don’t really cheat!  I just don’t crave unhealthy foods anymore.  I do believe that everything is acceptable in moderation.  If I have to choose something, I would say a good burger and fries, but only the shoestring ones dipped in REAL Ranch.  

Q11: What is your CrossFit story and what has CrossFit done for you since you have been coming?

A11:  I signed up for CrossFit in order to get in shape for the Spartan Beast race in October.  When I first started, I truly believed that the Spartan Race would be one of those events that I signed up for with the intent to finish, but would quit before race time even started.  CrossFit has taught me that I can do a lot more than I though I could do. It has taught me to work hard and push myself beyond what I thought was possible and NEVER quit.  I am now registered for 2 more races in the spring and planning to complete the trifecta next year!.
